Idaho, “This Way Out” (Caroline):

With the departure of John Berry, Jeff Martin takes his four-string guitar and goes it alone for Idaho’s sophomore effort. Using his background in jazz, and some of his own bizarre dissonant tunings, Martin crafts a sound slightly reminiscent of the darker side of “Sister lovers”-era Big Star, if Thurston Moore had sat in. Pop this one in your tape deck during your next long late-night drive. A lonely atmosphere is the best place to recreate the haunting musical spirit Martin conjures in tunes such as “Weird Wood” and “Sweep” on this moody epic. ( CC )
