It seems appropriate, somehow, to mention here the debut effort by another American band. Idaho. Year After Year (Quigley) is quite remarkably melancholic.

It was no surprise at all to learn that Idaho have recently been the support act for, Red House Painters’ Great Night Out, But glib put-downs aside, there is something spooky about the passionless tenor voice and mournful guitar which keeps you listening out to their tales of woe.

The publicity reveals that the duo making up Idaho “both had their hearts broken, their ideals smashed, only to put new pain and anger into their songs”. They have succeeded.
